Fracture Management
Dr. Akinbo provides care for fractures. Fractures refer to broken bones. A broken bone can be sustained from either high energy or low energy injuries. It can be managed non-surgically if not a major weight bearing bone and alignment is maintained. This can be accomplished with a brace, splint or cast with regular x-rays to make sure the alignment remains maintained. When a fracture is significantly displaced, or in a major weight bearing bone (hip), it will need surgical management. Surgical management of fractures can involve the use of plates and screws, rods, and even joint replacements.
Fragility fractures refer to fractures that occur from standing height or less as the body should be able to withstand these forces without breaking. The most common sites of fragility fractures are the hips, wrists, spine, and shoulder. These fractures will require a laboratory work up to identify metabolic abnormalities that could have resulted in the fractures as well as to help institute appropriate treatments to help prevent future fractures.
