Dr. Akinbo is a fellowship trained joint replacement surgeon. He routinely manages hip arthritis with individualized treatment plans that can be surgical or non-surgical. Non-surgical measures of managing hip arthritis include home exercises, pain medications, physical therapy, and cortisone injections. Dr. Akinbo performs hip replacement surgeries when non-surgical measures have failed. He performs mini-posterior and direct anterior hip replacements. He also performs revision hip replacement when a hip replacement has failed.

Hip Arthritis

Hip arthritis develops when the cartilage in the hip has worn out. This can cause pain. The pain can be debilitating. Pain is mostly with walking or standing, but can also be present at rest. The pain can impact the quality of life. Hip arthritis can be managed without surgery. Surgery is considered when the pain can no longer be managed non-surgically. Surgery for hip arthritis is usually a total hip replacement. Click here for more information on hip arthritis.

Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement is performed when arthritis pain in the hip is no longer tolerable and no longer responsive to non-surgical management. Total hip replacement will replace the cartilage of the ball and socket joint of the hip. This is usually with metal, plastic, and ceramic components. Most patients will need physical therapy after surgery to rehabilitate the replaced hip. Click here for more information on total hip replacement. Revision Total Hip Replacement

Revision total hip replacement is re-do surgery for a hip replacement that has failed. Figuring out a hip replacement has failed and how/why will often require careful examination, imaging, and laboratory studies. A failed hip replacement can cause significant pain issues; sometimes, the pain is as bad as what it was before the initial hip replacement and could even be worse. A painful hip replacement can benefit from surgery when indicated and when the cause for failure has been identified. Hip revision surgeries can involve removing one or all of the components of the initial hip replacement and replacing with new components. Mini-Posterior and Direct Anterior Hip Replacement

Mini-posterior and direct anterior hip replacement are two less invasive ways of replacing a worn out hip joint employed by Dr. Akinbo. Dr. Akinbo employs an individualized approach to hip replacement surgery, and decides on which approach would best accommodate ease of surgery for a particular patient without compromising the results of the hip replacement surgery.
